Rosneft Increasing Ecological Performance of Business

12 December 2022

Rosneft held the IX Annual All-Corporate Ecologist Congress. An event’s key topic was the implementation of initiatives outlined in the Rosneft-2030 strategy on relevant aspects of the ESG agenda, such as environmental protection and decarbonisation.

Over 260 employees of the Company – top managers, heads and specialists of Rosneft’s core business units and over 110 subsidiaries – attended the congress.

Rosneft’s ecologists noted significant progress in improving the Company’s environmental performance on key environment-oriented indicators over 5 years (from 2017 to 2021):

  • a 28% reduction in gross pollutant emissions;
  • a 13% reduction in the disposal of polluted wastewater;
  • over 3,000 hectares of disturbed land, including those of “historic heritage”, have been remediated.

Preliminary estimates suggest that a similar trend remains in place in 2022.

The congress prioritised biodiversity conservation, introduction of circular economy principles, elimination of ecological “historic legacy”, development of geotechnical monitoring system aimed at achieving cumulative positive impact on ecosystems, which the Company has identified as a strategic initiative.

At the special session on achieving decarbonisation goals, experts presented the results of an innovative project on the detection, assessment and elimination of fugitive sources of methane emissions at hydrocarbon production sites. The standard programme of methane emission source detection measures is based on the results of surveys at 20 of the Company’s production sites. Rosneft specialists have also developed a corporate methodology to quantify methane emissions.

The report on the status of Rosneft’s flagship integrated environmental forestation project in the Krasnoyarsk region attracted particular interest. The project focuses not only on increasing the greenhouse gas sequestration, but also on creating favourable habitats for animals and birds, including rare ones, normalising the water regime, etc.

Presentations on various aspects of the integrated environmental permit (IEP) were of great value to the Company’s subsidiaries. A systematic analysis of regulatory changes in this area as well as practical recommendations from the SamaraNIPIneft-based corporate environmental institute for preparing EP applications were presented to the congress participants.
